This was a departure from Springsteen's debut as he attempted to make the kind of album HE wanted to make. As a result, his label actively worked to torpedo its success. This is not your typical Springsteen album. The album finds the Boss and the band in spectacular form, exploring a variety of musical and narrative styles he has not really revisited since this album was released in 1973. And more's the pity!
