Listen to full episode:
There are three bands from the early 70s that defined are considered the “holy trinity of power pop": the Raspberries, Badfinger, and Big Star. On this week's episode, we discuss the debut LP from one of those bands, Number 1 Record by Big Star.
"Named after a local grocery store chain in the Memphis area, Big Star’s two main personalities Alex Chilton (who sang one of the biggest hits of 1967 with the Box Tops, "the Letter") and Chris Bell (a meticulous studiophile), wrote heartbreakingly earnest tunes that were instant ear candy. Full of monster hooks and achingly beautiful melodies, the album also posses a sort of melancholia that makes for a compelling listen. Selling only 10,000 copies upon release, the unintentionally ironically named album was a critical darling and the masterwork of what ultimately became one of the most influential bands of the 70s.
